My EmployAbility – Michael Barron

15 Jan 2015

“When I was 15, I contracted salmonella, septicaemia and bacterial meningitis that subsequently left me with a hearing condition, chronic fatigue and muscular pains in my legs. By undertaking a reduced timetable, I was able to continue my studies and read law at the University of Warwick. I was introduced to EmployAbility by the disability services team at Warwick in my final year. I had previously been applying for training contracts and internships at various city law firms; EmployAbility had a relationship with Herbert Smith and were offering to provide guidance on strengthening my application.

Sarah took a genuine interest in my application from the outset, providing guidance and support throughout the process. Initially, we discussed the skills necessary for a career in law and the most effective method of demonstrating them in my written application. Prior to EmployAbility, I had struggled to identify and draw out my skills, many of which arose from my management of my disability, and my applications were consequently not a true reflection of my potential. In preparation for the assessment centre and interview, Sarah provided invaluable interview techniques that gave me the confidence to discuss both the application I had prepared and my disability. EmployAbility also liaised with Herbert Smith to arrange adjustments for the assessment process.

With the help of EmployAbility, I secured a vacation scheme at Hebert Smith, from which I was able to secure a training contract. Going forward, I hope to qualify in September and practice as a solicitor. I am grateful for the foundation and support EmployAbility has provided for my legal career. ”

At EmployAbility we work with disabled university students and graduates to ease the transition from education into employment. To take advantage of these opportunities, the first step is to register with us. You can also contact us with any specific queries.

I just want to take this opportunity to say thank you as well. I think its been incredibly tough for me to deal with learning that I have dyslexia and navigating what this means for me in terms of my career and it has at times really affected my confidence but I am really grateful to you and Employability because its nice to know people care about people like myself.
