About Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley has earned recognition as a leader in financial services as one of the most admired companies in the industry. Since it was founded in 1935, Morgan Stanley and its people have helped redefine the meaning of financial services. The firm has continually broken new ground in advising clients on strategic transactions, in pioneering the global expansion of finance and capital markets, and in providing new opportunities for individual and institutional investors.

Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage Division

Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage acts as a strategic partner to more than 800 top hedge fund managers, executes and clears their trades across asset classes, time zones and currencies; provides financing and expertise to help them manage their risk and benefit from technology; and consults to help launch new funds and connect with their potential investors.

The Internship

The one-year Internship is based in London and begins in June, and offers you the opportunity to learn about a variety of product areas, while providing a clear understanding of how Prime Brokerage operates as a whole. Following an initial period of training and induction, you will be assigned to a particular team where you will spend the remainder of your placement. Interns are treated as a full-time employee of the team and work alongside experienced professionals at all levels.

The Training Programme

All new Industrial Placements participate in an orientation program covering the Firm’s businesses, the transition from an academic setting to a corporate environment and the chance to establish a network throughout the Firm, globally. Prime Brokerage Industrial Placements then attend divisional training where they learn core skills required to be successful on the job. The curriculum includes learning about Hedge Funds, the Sales & Trading Business, and the various products, processes and systems required to be successful in the role. In addition, Industrial Placements learn and network with peers, mentors and managers through group projects and other organized events.

Risk Management: review client portfolio risk reports and contribute to projects reviewing operational best practices, policies and procedures, and regulatory initiatives.

Client Service: provide operations support for hedge fund managers by reviewing the daily account activity and exceptions, ensuring clearance and settlement of trades, analysing corporate events, and servicing ad hoc inquiries and requests from clients. Relationship building and business development is also a key responsibilityin this role.

Client Consulting Services: help new funds launch with a range of go-live services and best practices consulting, including finding office space, vendor systems and project management for the fund launch process.

Technology: help to draft project plans, specifications, testing plans and implement schedules for the planning and execution of internal workflow tools, Prime Brokerage websites and other client technology.

Finance: help to analyse trends in client profitability, including fees charged to clients, costs of internal and external financing, and direct and allocated costs.
