About the Merchant Banking Division

The world of Merchant Banking is exciting and unpredictable. You should be flexible and enthusiastic about developing a very diverse set of skills.

The division is organized into three key businesses: Corporate, Real Estate, and Infrastructure.

Corporate Equity and Corporate Debt

MBD has raised over $82 billion of capital (including leverage) since 1986 through 17 investment funds and invests in private equity, mezzanine debt, senior secured loan and distressed debt securities. MBD has been investing in private equity since 1986, distressed debt since 1990, mezzanine debt since 1996 and senior secured loans since 2008. In addition, MBD has invested the firm’s capital in growth stage and technology companies globally since 1982.

Real Estate Equity and Real Estate Debt

Since 1991, MBD has raised $32 billion of capital through various real estate-focused investment vehicles across a number of geographies, product types, and structures investing equity and debt real estate securities. Goldman Sachs is currently investing its Whitehall International 2008 fund, the eleventh in a series of global diversified funds. In addition, the GS Real Estate Mezzanine Partners fund was established to invest in real estate mezzanine loans, B-notes, CMBS, preferred equity and real estate-based corporate debt in North America with $2.6 billion of commitments raised since 2009.

Infrastructure

Since 2006, Merchant Banking has raised approximately $10 billion of capital through two investment funds to make direct investments in infrastructure and infrastructure related assets and companies. The Infrastructure Investment Group manages the GS Infrastructure Partners family of funds, which seeks to pursue a buy-and-hold strategy that invests in assets with strong, stable cash flows.

As a Merchant Banking Intern you will be given real responsibilities, allowing you to explore what it would be like to hold a full-time position at Goldman Sachs.

During your time with them, you will assist team members by gathering information about potential investment opportunities and industries, helping to prepare presentation materials, and performing financial analysis and industry research. You will also undergo formal and informal training and participate in networking events.
