Summer Internship Programme, Global Markets Technology & Operations Division

An internship or placement is your opportunity to gain an insight into working life at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, to network with the company’s employees and to develop your skills. You’ll work alongside employees of all levels and have an opportunity to participate in project work with the potential for measurable impact on our business. By joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch, you’ll also receive the highest level of training and mentoring support.

Running for nine weeks between June and August, a summer internship will give you a thorough introduction to the financial services industry. The programme begins with an induction week covering core skills, and you will be assigned a mentor and a buddy who will help you to make the most of your orientation and training. There will also be plenty of networking opportunities and a speaker series, giving you the chance to meet a range of employees from new starters to seasoned senior executives.

Technology touches every part of Bank of America Merrill Lynch and underpins each deal they make. The nature of their business means that they use a wide variety of technologies ranging from low latency programming to big data challenges. Technology is critical to their success owing to their investment in cutting-edge technology and Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Global Technology and Operations (GT&O) division places growth and success as a central part of its strategy. This gives their business the competitive edge to solve business problems by delivering high quality and practical solutions.

Within GT&O, Technologists in Global Markets and Risk Technology and Operations (GMRT&O) teams are organised to work alongside specific areas of the business in harnessing existing and new technologies to innovatively design and develop all sales, trading and risk technology applications related to the strategic direction of Global Markets.


You could have the opportunity to work closely with our trading floor to develop the software that enables them to make the split second decisions that their business is founded on, or using your creativity to enhance our state-of-the-art systems that receive petabytes of real-time data from world markets and provide actionable information in milliseconds. Whatever the task, they expect fresh thinking from their technologists where fast turnaround and delivery can mean that work is challenging and pressured but also very satisfying as solutions move from concept to implementation in weeks.  

Their Technology Developer and Analyst programme spans Global Markets and Risk Technology & Operations. Typical day to day responsibilities will comprise working on a multi functional project team which combines technical expertise in languages such as Java, C # or Python, with a deep understanding of our business and its competitive environment.

As a summer intern within Technology, you will:

  • Meet directly with users on the trading floor to prepare initial programming specifications from user requirements
  • Develop and test algorithms to solve complex business problems  
  • Design and build complex data to support new business initiatives  
  • Employ the latest mindset techniques such as agile development to deliver solutions in order to succeed
