Software Engineer, Google.com – London, UK

The area: Engineering, Google.com

With analytical and code-level troubleshooting abilities to spare, Google.com’s engineers are technology whizzes who love being in the center of the action. We tackle a range of complex software and systems issues, including monitoring, responding to and safeguarding the availability of our most popular services.

The role: Software Engineer, Google.com

As a Software Engineer working on Google’s critical production applications and infrastructure, your mission will be to ensure Google is always fast, available, scalable and engineered to withstand unparalleled demand. You will be in the thick of solving the [often unexpected] problems of systems at scale in a way most engineers never experience.

Your scope is from the kernel level to the continent level. This position requires the flexibility and aptitude to zoom in to fine-grained detail, and the agility to zoom right back out and up the stack. Delve into how software performs, packets flow, and hardware and code interact, in support of managing services, steering global traffic and predicting and preventing failures…. all in a day’s work.

You will design and develop systems to run Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Wave, Maps, Voice, AppEngine, and more. You’ll manage, automate, and make data-based decisions and judgment calls which influence globally distributed applications. You’ll own the production services which comprise *.google.com, and critical infrastructure like GFS, BigTable, MapReduce and large-scale ‘cloud computing’ clusters.

You will also be driving performance and reliability from software and infrastructure at massive scale — where dealing in petabytes and gigabits and shifting by orders of magnitude is routine. You will tackle challenging, novel situations every day and work with just about every other engineering and operations team at Google. You will be looked upon as an expert and advocate to fellow engineers on making design and reliability trade-offs in running large-scale services and engineering complex systems that fail gracefully and transparently to users.

The most successful candidates for this role will have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, fluency in coding and systems design, solid communication skills and a desire to tackle the complex problems of scale which are uniquely Google. We are particularly interested in software engineers familiar with aspects of running web services at scale — depth in either networking technologies and Unix system calls are strong pluses.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage availability, latency, scalability and efficiency of Google services by engineering reliability into software and systems
  • Respond to and resolve emergent service problems; write software and build automation to prevent problem recurrence
  • Participate in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, software performance analysis and system tuning
  • Review and influence ongoing design, architecture, standards and methods for operating services and systems

Requirements:

  • BS/MS Degree in Computer Science or related field, and/or equivalent work experience
  • Fluency in one or more of: C, C++, Java; and familiarity with one or more of: Python, Perl, Shell, PHP
  • Expertise in data structures, algorithms and complexity analysis
  • Expertise in analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Knowledge of IP networking, network analysis, performance and application issues using standard tools like tcpdump
  • Ability to handle periodic oncall duty as well as out-of-band requests

Working for a world-leading financial regulator means having the remit and the scope to safeguard the interests of consumers, to influence the way financial institutions operate, to facilitate and champion fair and orderly markets and to contribute to the success of the country. A career in regulation will give you an invaluable insight into the complex, diverse and continually evolving financial services sector. There has never been a more exciting time to join the FSA – you will be stretched and challenged constantly.

About the Graduate Development Programme

The carefully constructed Graduate Development Programme will give you maximum benefit from the FSA’s broad based expertise. Based at their Canary Wharf office in London, it will give you in-depth exposure to the work within the UK’s financial services industry.

Rotations

After an intensive induction to introduce you to the organisation, the work, their aims and your peers, it’s straight down to business. As part of the programme, you will be allocated to one of the FSA’s business areas. You will also have the opportunity to experience different areas of the business on rotation. Here is an overview of some of the types of work on offer:

1. Supervision

Supervision is a core part of the work and an essential rotation for graduates looking to develop their communication, stakeholder management and analytical skills. Their supervisory work covers both retail and wholesale financial institutions. This includes major financial services groups, investment banks, insurance firms as well as 15,000 small firms. You could expect to develop a full understanding of all aspects of supervision including strategy, risk analysis and assessment – regularly liaising with stakeholders – and possibly also get involved in thematic work.

2. Risk

Generally, Risk roles are either related to FSA Strategic Risk or dealing with Risks that the firms we regulate are exposed to.

Internal risk roles involve providing macroeconomic and top-down market analysis so an FSA ‘house view’ can be established on the economic outlook. Internal Risk also covers policymaking in risk management.

As part of the programme, you will also undertake a six-month placement in a different business unit to give you breadth of experience.

External Risk roles cover areas such as Prudential Risk and Conduct Risk and involve working with the teams in firms responsible for risk frameworks/modelling. These roles also encompass thematic work on industry-wide issues.

3. Policy

Policy is about formulating, delivering and implementing clear policy on conduct and standards that can be easily understood by consumers and firms. Policy teams act as a centre of excellence for risk management, accounting and auditing issues, providing advice and guidance on emerging issues to frontline supervisors and senior management – the work could also involve an international or EU element.

4. Enforcement and Financial Crime

Enforcement departments carry out administrative, civil and criminal proceedings in the enforcement of the Financial Services and Markets Act, FSA rules and other regulatory requirements. This includes investigating people who are carrying on regulated activities without authorisation. The Division also works with other regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies in the UK and abroad.

The Financial Crime and Intelligence Department helps the FSA to reduce the extent to which it is possible for a business to be used for financial crime. The department enables the organisation to increase the regulatory focus in this area. The department comprises policy, intelligence, sector and operations teams who together deal with any issues involving money laundering, fraud or dishonesty, or market abuse.

5. Market Monitoring and Listings

Market Monitoring identifies and investigates possible market abuse cases. Teams look at market activity and ensure the timely disclosure of information, liaise with listed companies and conduct preliminary enquiries when breaches have occurred. It also sets policies on headline-making market abuse issues such as short selling.

Within Market Listings, Transactions teams ensure listing particulars and circulars sent to shareholders by listed companies comply with the Listing Rules. The Listing Applications team admits, suspends and cancels securities to the Official List.

Secondment

Later on in the programme (usually your third year) you’ll go on an external secondment, giving you the opportunity to view the industry from a different perspective, while building on your knowledge of financial services. Graduates have previously been seconded to investment banks, law firms, fund managers and professional services firms.

Sponsored study

Personal development is something the FSA takes very seriously. So, in addition to the rotation programme, they offer a comprehensive range of business awareness sessions, training modules and professional qualification sponsorship. The latter includes the option to apply for support towards gaining qualifications such as the Investment Management Certificate, SII Diploma, CII Certificate in Financial Planning or becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst. So you can be sure there’ll be no gaps in your knowledge.

They will also consider sponsorship of other related qualifications providing a justifiable business case is put forward.

The rewards

Flexibility and choice are FSA’s guiding principles when it comes to benefits. So whether you want to pick your own or stick with their standard package, there’ll be a competitive rewards package with your name on it. The starting salary for graduates is £29,000 – plus you also get a £2,500 joining bonus, as well as further performance-related rewards. The basic package also includes 23 days’ holiday, non-contributory money purchase pension scheme, life assurance, private medical insurance, health screening and the ever-handy interest-free season ticket loan.

The flexible benefits allowance lets you to opt for extra holiday (up to a maximum of 35 days), dental cover, childcare vouchers or travel insurance, or you could simply top up your pension contributions.

What’s more, they have created a strong social network, with a variety of sports teams, an on-site gym, and voluntary work, which will add even more to your job satisfaction.

Requirements

In addition to a 2.1 in any subject, 300 UCAS tariff points and the unrestricted right to work in the UK, you’ll need to be a decisive, results-driven, highly analytical team player with excellent people skills and initiative.

Financial Services Authority EmployAbility Specialist Graduate Schemes 2011

07 Nov 2010

FSA

About the Financial Services Authority

As the UK’s main financial services regulator, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) tackle’s regulation from both a prudential and consumer angle – what better starting point for a career in financial services?

Their remit covers five key areas: to maintain market confidence; to raise public awareness of the financial system; to ensure consumers are protected; to contribute to the protection and enhancement of the UK financial system and to target and reduce financial crime.

There are a number of specialist programmes at the FSA that you can apply for, please read on for details of the divisions you can apply for and the work that they do.

The Management Accountancy Programme 2011

The Finance division at the FSA supports staff in all Business Units with their financial and operational decision-making. This three-year programme will expose you to a broad range of finance and accounting work as you work towards your Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) qualification. So, by the end of the programme, you’ll have a wealth of experience behind you and a bright future ahead.

Rotations

You’ll spend time in the Financial Operations Department (Revenue and Management Accounting) before moving on to a series of rotations. You can expect to be involved in a range of work from planning and reporting, month end accounting, budgeting and forecasting, financial controls and procurement, as well as the management of related projects.

Secondment

In the final year of the programme your in-house training will be supplemented by an external secondment to an organisation of your choice, possibly to an investment bank, an insurance firm or a major retail company.

Sponsored Study

The programme includes full sponsorship to gain professional qualifications; the FSA will pay your CIMA course and examination fees and give you study leave. In conjunction with this, they will also look to give you a support network through “buddying” and “mentoring” schemes, where people who have studied CIMA can help with any queries or concerns that you have.

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants www.cimaglobal.com

The Actuarial Development Programme 2011

Actuaries at the FSA provide actuarial advice to their supervisory teams, undertake research into risks affecting the insurance industry and assist the FSA’s policy teams in the formation of principles, rules and guidance for the industry. Over the course of this programme you’ll spend six months with each of the core actuarial teams – life insurance and general insurance – before a further four six-month rotations. These could be in a number of areas including Policy, Supervision or the team currently dedicated to reviewing firms’ internal models under the new Solvency II framework. You will also undertake an external secondment.

The core life and general insurance actuarial teams are based in the Prudential Risk Division of the FSA and work alongside other technical specialists in the financial services sphere including credit risk, market risk and operational risk specialists. This arrangement is designed to facilitate sharing of ideas between the banking and insurance industry and keeps our actuarial teams at the forefront of industry techniques and issues.

Working with FSA firm supervisors

This is the prime area of focus. Each medium or large insurer has an actuary assigned to it. Actuaries in these teams provide advice on a broad range of topics such as capital assessments, adequacy of technical provisions, mergers and acquisitions and interpretation of treating customers fairly for complex insurance products. The work involves desk-based reviews and visits to firms and actuaries can work alone or as part of small teams but always with the friendly support of the wider actuarial teams.

Research

Both actuarial teams undertake research using a variety of methods such as firm surveys, reviewing academic and actuarial papers and taking part in working parties of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The research helps the FSA to keep on top of emerging risks in the industry and to set benchmarks by which they can identify outliers. Examples of recent pieces of research the FSA has undertaken are insurers’ exposures to complex assets such as Asset Backed Securities, longevity risk modelling and they are currently looking into issues affecting the motor market as well as wider reserving issues.

Secondment

In order to increase your all-round knowledge and commercial awareness, you’ll also be seconded to an actuarial role within an external organisation for six months.

Sponsored Study

Throughout the programme, you’ll be given all the support you need to qualify including a generous allowance for time off for study and payment for your tuition, exam fees and study materials.

Prudential Risk Specialist Graduate Scheme 2011

The Prudential Risk Division (PRD) provides the FSA with a dedicated resource, offering expertise in the principal areas of Risk Management. The division is comprised of around 260 risk professionals, most of whom have extensive industry experience.

Participation in the programme, will allow you to develop a thorough understanding of risk management tools and techniques.

This will be achieved through:

  • “Hands-on” experience gained through rotations across number of teams within PRD.
  • Participation in a sponsored study programme.

Suitable candidates will have strong academic credentials. This will be evidenced by a postgraduate qualification in a quantitative discipline. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with a graduate degree will also be considered. In addition, candidates should be able to demonstrate strong interest in/knowledge of Financial Markets.

Rotations

Allen & Overy Training Contract 2011

31 Jul 2010

With more than 5,000 people working in 35 major financial centres in 24 countries, and more than half of these outside the UK, Allen & Overy truly is a global firm.

Our international reach gives us the ability to provide world class expertise combined with local knowledge enabling us to work on some of the most exciting and complex transactions. Our rapid advances in areas such as Central and Eastern Europe and the Far East are indicative of our forward-thinking strategy. The future of Allen & Overy’s success is in increased international working and by working with us you will be a part of this. In 2010, we expanded our international reach to include offices in Australia and Qatar.

About the Training Contract

You’ll gain global experience, work on cutting-edge deals and learn from lawyers who are leaders in their field of practice. We are renowned for the high quality of our Banking, Corporate and International Capital Markets advice but also have major strengths in Dispute Resolution, Employment & Benefits, Tax and Real Estate. As a trainee you will be involved in a number of interesting and complex deals and cases. Trainees play an active part in each transaction, so your contributions make a real difference to the success of your team.

Your training will be based on three or six month rotations (known as ‘seats’) through a number of departments or practice areas, where you will sit with a partner or an associate. Seats are available in all our practice areas, allowing trainees to experience the full range of work we do, with the priority seat system enabling you to spend time in an area that is of particular interest.

Our core areas of expertise are Corporate, Banking and International Capital Markets and as a trainee you will spend at least twelve months of your training contract gaining experience in at least two of these areas. Our trainees also need to gain contentious experience during their training contract which they do in our Litigation or Employment departments. We now offer our trainees the option of completing a Litigation course to gain their contentious experience if they are sure their interests lie elsewhere. The course is run by Nottingham Law School and consists of five days’ tuition and regular visits to a legal advice centre throughout your training contract to gain practical contentious experience (and provide valuable pro bono help).

We currently offer 36 international seats in 19 of our offices and trainees usually apply for secondments for the final six months of their training contract. International secondments are particularly useful as they provide trainees with an awareness of cultural and regional differences, which is especially important as most of the work we do is cross-border and international.

We also offer a number of client secondments, which enable our trainees to better understand our clients’ businesses, by working alongside them. These secondments normally take place in the second year of training.

Alongside their day-to-day work, we encourage our trainees to get involved with pro bono and community projects. As a trainee you could become involved in a number of pro bono initiatives such as giving free legal advice at the Battersea Legal Advice Centre evening surgery or working for organisations such as Interights. Last year 94% of our trainees got involved with one of our pro bono initiatives.

What we look for

Individuality. There’s no such thing as a typical Allen & Overy candidate – quite the opposite in fact. We’re open-minded and interested in people who share that quality.

We are looking for individuals who can demonstrate a strong academic performance – you’ll be heading for at least a 2(i), in any degree discipline, and have 340 UCAS points (AAB) at A-level (or equivalent). But beyond this we want to see evidence of teamwork, communication skills, planning and organisation, problem solving, commercial awareness and commitment – to a career in law, and to a career with A&O.

The Legal Practice Course

We provide the Allen & Overy LPC at The College of Law in London, which all of our future trainees study before commencing their training contract with us. This is a one year course (which is preceded by the GDL if you did not study law at university). Our fee earners and training team have worked closely with The College of Law to develop a bespoke LPC that reflects the particular requirements of a legal career in the City. The course features materials based on real examples of the transactions we do and enables you to familiarise yourself with our precedents, making it easier when you start at A&O. The modules you will take focus on our core practice areas (Banking, Corporate and International Capital Markets) to ensure your time at Law School provides the best possible preparation for your training contract with us.

Mayer Brown EmployAbility Training Contract 2010 for Students/ Graduates with Disabilities

EmployAbility, in partnership with Mayer Brown, is pleased to offer students and graduates with disabilities the opportunity to apply for the Mayer Brown training contract programme.

About the Training Contract

Trainees are given high levels of responsibility, case management and client contact from an early stage. The firm also has an extensive support network in place throughout the training contract in the form of senior-level support and continuous appraisals.

For a large international firm, our London office remains a tightly knit team harbouring an open and inclusive culture. You will nevertheless be given significant opportunities to assist on matters which may be multi-disciplinary, cross-border, complex and high-profile in nature, working alongside some award-winning teams and individuals. Our main practice areas in London are corporate, finance, litigation and dispute resolution, real estate, insurance and reinsurance, pensions and employment, competition and trade, tax, intellectual property, and information technology.

As a trainee in London, you will be encouraged to play an active part of a team, dealing with clients on a day-to-day basis on a wide range of business issues. You will undertake four ‘seats’ during your two year training contract. During each seat you will share a room with either a partner or a senior associate who will be responsible for supervising your work and continuing development throughout your seat.

In 2009, our trainees were able to tailor their training contract from a range of 24 different seats, including our main practice areas in London, client secondments and international secondments (Brussels, Hong Kong, New York, and São Paulo). Shortly before you start your training contract, you will be able to shape the direction of your contract by expressing your preferences for your four seats during your training contract. We regularly review your seat choices with you throughout the training contract, as we realise that your preferences may change with the knowledge and experience you will gain.

Over the course of your training contract, we will take time to ensure that you are aware of the responsibilities of each seat by providing comprehensive training that goes far beyond the requirements of the Professional Skills Course (PSC). Additional training will equip you with skills to understand the international business world, develop client relationships and undertake advanced legal research. You will also benefit from the expertise of professional support lawyers who are responsible for providing briefing sessions on key legal developments and maintain in-house precedent databases.

The Legal Practice Course

Your training programme with Mayer Brown will start long before your training contract begins – on our bespoke Legal Practice Course with Nottingham Law at Kaplan Law School in London, which we ask all of our future trainees to attend. Elements of the course have been designed by our Lawyers in conjunction with Nottingham Law at Kaplan Law School and we are the only UK law firm working with them to offer an US law introductory course. Our trainees studying the LPC at Kaplan have a great deal of contact with the firm throughout the LPC year, with regular visits to our offices, both professionally in the form of research tasks and presentation projects and socially, for drinks and meetings with our current trainees and partners. We have a wealth of experience at our London office in the form of associates, partners and PSLs and we encourage our LPC students to take full advantage of their knowledge and experience.
