About the FSA
The importance of regulation has never been greater. Financial issues are front-page news and, in light of one of the biggest financial crises in history, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) has had to develop a far-reaching strategy that will change the way we work and the shape of the industry as a whole.
The FSA is the UK’s sole financial services regulator, in 2013 will divide into two new bodies. The regulatory framework will change, but the new organisations will continue to rigorously supervise all 27,000+ regulated firms and cover the four key areas of the FSA remit: to maintain market confidence; to ensure consumers are protected; to contribute to the protection and enhancement of the UK financial system; and to target and reduce financial crime.
This is an exciting time to be involved, as they implement the new regulatory regime and transition into a new era. The internship will give you an insight into why a career at the FSA at this crucial time will give those a key part to play in these changes and the opportunity to develop their careers by shaping these exciting new organisations. It’s a tough job but it’s also fascinating – a constantly evolving arena in which to build a rewarding future.
About the Summer internships
The broad remit of the FSA means that they can offer diverse and unique internship roles that are not available in other organisations. As part of an internship programme, you’ll be assigned to one business project for 10 weeks. Being part of real business tasks, you’ll gain valuable industry experience, and build the foundations for your future career.
Our summer internship is intended to give you real responsibility from day one, and offer you the opportunity to see the organisation’s work first hand. This will help you to decide whether our Graduate Development Programme is right for you.
Summer intern training
The FSA offer an extensive training programme and excellent opportunities for your development. When you join, you will be assigned a buddy. A graduate from a previous intake, they will answer any questions you may have, introduce you to the teams and demonstrate procedures – ensuring you get the most out of your internship and easing your integration into the FSA.
Benefitting from on-the-job training by your line manager and team, you will also have the opportunity to take further internal courses in technical and soft skills by booking on their self service portal, Chrysalis.
Your line manager is responsible for your day-to-day development. He or she will set your objectives at the start of your internship, in line with your specific role and development needs. You will then have a formal mid-term appraisal in week five, and a formal final appraisal in week ten. These, combined with your ability to meet key performance indicators will contribute towards you receiving a graduate offer.
What the FSA look for
You will need to have gained, or be expecting, a 2.1 or above in any subject. You will be analytical and results-driven, combining a genuine interest in the work of the FSA with the desire to make a positive difference to financial-services firms and consumers.
As well as having a strong commercial awareness, the ideal candidate will be a proactive team player with the confidence and people skills to build effective working relationships and make a real impact on those around you. Above all, you will have the drive and ambition to make the most of these attributes in an environment where you'll have your wits tested, but not your hand held.
The FSA is committed to promoting equality and diversity in all areas of their work as an employer and a regulator. They welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and we want our staff to be proud of their shared values and identity and to work together to secure our vision. The FSA believe that differences should be recognised, supported and celebrated.
