EmployAbility is delighted to be working with Slaughter and May to offer disabled students and graduates the opportunity to apply to their Training Contract .

The Firm

Slaughter and May is regarded as one of the most prestigious law firms in the world. They advise on high-profile and groundbreaking international transactions and have an excellent and varied client list that includes leading corporations, financial institutions and governments.

The Training Contract

In line with the aim to provide you with an exceptional depth of knowledge and breadth of experience, during your two years as a trainee solicitor you will spend time in different practice areas . This will help you to decide the area in which you are most interested and start developing the versatility and vision essential to becoming a trusted legal adviser to your clients.

The areas you choose are referred to as "seats". Each seat lasts either three or six months and together they give you the opportunity to experience both contentious and non-contentious work.

During each seat you will share an office with an experienced lawyer who will guide you through complex points of law and practice and ensure that you are actively involved in their work.

Every month a partner will review your progress and, at the end of each seat, you will be given a full appraisal. You will also receive regular informal feedback. All of these reviews are designed to benefit you. They provide a forum in which to discuss your progress and ways to develop your legal knowledge, skills and experience.

During the second year of your training contract, you will have the opportunity to apply to go on a secondment abroad.

Being a successful lawyer requires more than purely legal knowledge. You will therefore also take part in a comprehensive legal and commercial education programme that will cover technical knowledge, legal skills, and commercial and financial awareness.

Who Should Apply

Slaughter and May is currently recruiting for their ‘non law’ intake.

The 'non-law' intake is for:

  • Final year students or graduates of a non-law degree subject
  • Final year students or graduates of a law degree outside of England and Wales
  • Students and graduates who have completed, or who are required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to complete, some or all, of the modules of the GDL, before commencing their LPC.

If you are a law student or graduate, please apply to the 'law' intake.

Academic Requirements and Qualities

The qualities that Slaughter and May look for in their trainees include common sense, a sharp intellect, independent thought, judgement and a good sense of humour.

To thrive at Slaughter and May, you will also need enthusiasm, commitment, a willingness to accept responsibility and the ability to get on well with others.

The work is intellectually demanding so the minimum standard Slaughter and May look for in their applicants is three very strong A-levels (or equivalent) and either a good 2:1 or a 1st in your first degree.

However, if there are extenuating circumstances which may have affected your grades, please contact Sarah Denness on +44 (0)7852 764 684 or email info@employ-ability.org.uk for further information.

Proficiency in a foreign language is a bonus but not a requirement.

Trainees come from a range of universities: it is the quality of the candidate, not your university, which is important to Slaughter and May.

Salaries and Benefits

Slaughter and May pay prospective trainees a maintenance allowance and cover tuition and examination fees for both the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course. In some cases they offer grants for other relevant postgraduate studies and language courses.

In addition, Slaughter and May award a £500 prize to all those who go on to achieve first class honours in their undergraduate degree after accepting their offer.
