About the NHS
We are Europe’s single largest organisation and one of the world’s largest publicly funded health services. We employ some 1.3 million people, work with budgets of over £110 billion and look after 60 million people. What’s more, we remain free at the point of service for all our UK residents. So, understandably, it takes nothing less than total dedication to handle the sheer scope and complexity of our remit.
Belonging to the people, our purpose is clear: to save lives, improve health and show compassion to people when their need is greatest. As part of this, we’re committed to delivering a patient-centred, clinician-led, locally driven NHS. However, now over 60 years old, we’re growing and changing faster today than at any time in our history. And we recognise that more needs to be done if our service is to adapt to the current climate, and perhaps more importantly, prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
As you will know, the NHS, along with all other public sector organisations, is facing huge budgetary challenges and needs to realise between £15 – £20 billion cost savings over the next few years. So it is vital that we have all the necessary processes in place to continue delivering the same exceptional standards of care, even with potentially reduced resources. This calls for strong leadership and clear direction. That’s why it’s equally critical that we have the right people in place to rise to these new challenges, find innovative ways of working and drive others to do the same.
