The Financial Services Authority EmployAbility Graduate & Internship Programmes 2009

About The FSA

It’s our role, at the FSA, to regulate the UK’s financial services industry and deliver benefits to consumers and firms alike. On the one hand, we aim to get a fair deal for everyone in their financial affairs. On the other, we’re committed to maintaining London’s status as a world-leading international financial centre. Whatever we’re doing, you can be sure we do it to the best of our considerable abilities – so where better to experience the full spectrum of finance?

With such a broad and profound influence, we can offer graduates an unrivalled overview of one of the UK’s most complex and critical industries. Not to mention the kind of intellectual challenge that simply isn’t available elsewhere. What more would you expect from a unique organisation fulfilling a unique role?

We work with firms ranging from banks, building societies and insurance companies to financial advisers, fund managers, mortgage brokers and insurance intermediaries. As a result, we can give our graduates an insight into the entire market. So if you want to become a true authority in financial services, why not read on and discover more?

The Graduate Development Programme

What does it take to become a big cheese in financial services? Our carefully constructed Graduate Development Programme based at our Canary Wharf office in London will certainly set you on your way. The programme will give you in-depth exposure to our work within the UK's financial services industry – from supervising firms, regulating markets and exchanges and authorising firms and individuals to work in the UK, to developing policies, promoting public understanding and protecting consumers.

After an intensive induction to introduce you to our organisation, our work, our aims and your peers, it’s straight down to business. Your three placements around the organisation will give you a breadth of experience and a unique overview of the financial services industry. In your third year you’ll go on a six-month external secondment giving you the opportunity to view the industry from a different perspective while building on your knowledge of financial services. Graduates have previously been seconded to investment banks, law firms, fund managers and professional services firms.

Personal development is something we take very seriously and in addition to the rotation programme, we offer a comprehensive range of business awareness sessions, training modules and professional qualification sponsorship such as the Investment Management Certificate, the SII Diploma and the CII Certificate in Financial Planning to ensure that there are no gaps in your knowledge.

The Summer Internship Programme

You can only learn so much in a lecture. There’s no substitute for being at the heart of the action, experiencing the responsibility, complexity and buzz of the FSA and the industry it regulates. We’re confident that the exposure and practical experience you’ll gain will see your knowledge grow and grow over the course of our 10-week programme, providing an invaluable platform for your career.

As an intern, you’ll be given similar responsibilities to our graduates, so if you put a lot in, you’ll get plenty out. There are opportunities in a range of areas – you could be involved in the supervision of firms to ensure they are complying with regulatory requirements, the authorisation of firms and individuals to work in the UK, policy development or consumer education. You can also apply specifically for our Legal Internship Programme, which will be particularly attractive if you’re interested in joining our Legal Development Programme as a graduate.

The majority of our interns join our Canary Wharf office in London although we also offer some positions at our Edinburgh office.
