Project in Environment Health and Safety: Industrial Hygiene aspects in Wastewater Treatment - 0801042

Dow Terneuzen has a biological Wastewater Treatment facility. Associated with the intake of specific raw wastewater industrial hygiene aspects have to be addressed. The activities comprise emission monitoring, selecting possible improvements and making recommendations for follow-up.

Scope of work comprises of three areas:

• Intake of specific wastewater (spent caustic)
• Collection of wastewater in a pit
• Removing floating sludge from secondary clarifiers

For these areas adequate data has to be collected through an appropriate measurement program. In parallel a survey of possible improvements will provide directions to make final recommendations for reducing possible exposure to undesired chemicals and waste.

You can start between June and August 2008 for a period of 2 months. You will be remunerated. In addition you can stay in a hotel room free of charge and share a living room and kitchen with max. 17 other (international) students.

For the Iberian organization, with 950 employees in 6 locations among Spain and Portugal, we are looking for a student, to be based in Tarragona

Dow Tarragona Ethylene plant has experienced a large number of new projects implemented over the latest years. New overpressure protection was needed for new and existing equipment. This, together with some new safety standards that are being implemented, makes it necesary to perform a complete review and update of those tools that are used for managing safety valves (inspections, revisions, operation/spare valves…).

The student will be responsible to review and update some tools that are currently being used, will have the opportunity to identify and implement improvements, and will have to implement some new standards in this field.

Many new tools are available nowadays that may be a good alternative to what is currently being used. The room for improvement and the relevance of these sytems are enormous, what makes the project an interesting and great opportunity to learn. The successful tudent shall work in colaboration with discipline, maintenance, improvement and production engineer in order to develop at least 4 Equipment Maintenance Strategies (EMS). Student would work as a Team member for EMS Program.

  • Equipment description, including drawings, history research, etc.
  • Equipment performance, related to production data (actual, current and historical data).
  • Needs for improvement identified through Improvement organization and LTE (Life Time Extension) or FCA (Facility Condition Assessment)
  • FMEA development: Failure Mode Effect and Analysis.
  • Develop Predictive/Preventive Maintenance (PPM) Strategy.

By means of Dow's LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis) tool, analyze the process safety hazards in tank farms and loading stations on the Kallo site. Define protection layers in areas where the identified risk is too elevated.

Project in Manufacturing and Engineering: Dynamic simulation application for plant operation - 0800924

The Technology Center in charge of a semi-batch polymerization process is using an equation based dynamic model of the process to support the design of safe and optimal recipe for its production facilities worldwide. The objective of this project is to apply this model to specific plant situations, validate the results based on actual plant data and identify opportunities for optimization as well as defining gaps in the model requiring further developments.

Starting from an existing Dynamic Process Model (based on Aspen Custom Modeler), you will learn how to use this model for simulation and optimization of plant recipes. You will work with technology center and plant operation personel to collect relevant data for model validation. Based on the results, you will suggest and test potential workprocess and/or model improvements. You will be given the opportunity to develop tools (e.g. Excel VBA) to improve the efficiency of the validation and optimization workprocess.

The results will be documented in a report and will be presented orally. Most of the work will involve Dow proprietary information and will be subject to a secrecy agreement. During your stay at Dow, you will work with members of the project team involved with the model development and will have direct contact with engineers of the production facilities.

Project in Manufacturing and Engineering: Layers of Protection Analysis - 0801132

The Dow manufacturing facility at Seal Sands in Teesside is looking for a student to work on the project: Layers of Protection Analysis

Dow at Seal Sands has three projects that require technical support during their implementation:

1) A new steam condensate system will be installed during the fourth quarter of 2008. The new system will require commissioning and handover to the maintenance group. The student engineer will be required to help with both activities.

2) An ongoing project to implement the Layers of Protection (LOPA) at the site requires day-to-day engineering expertise. The project is a rolling program of design, construction, commissioning and handover of equipment critical to the safety of the plants. The engineering student will be required to participate in all aspects of the LOPA program when they arrive, and take a more proactive role as they gain experience.

3) A new firewater system will be installed at Seal Sands in 2009. The engineering student will get involved with the project in late 2008, and take a more active role as it progresses to completion at the end of 2009. Experience gained in the other projects will allow the student to take more a lead role in the construction and commissioning of this important project.

At our site in Stade we offer a Student Project to work on the following subject: Evaluation of membrane analysis by XRF

The project deals with the characterisation of used membrane from the Chlorine production. This involves sample preparation for XRF analysis, using different XRF methods and comparison of the results obtained with the used methods. The data is then used to discover differences between membranes analyzed and the used methods. Final goal is to have a fast and quantitative analysis for membranes by XRF.

The successful candidate can start in August 2008 for a period of 12 months.You will be remunerated.
